Our Story
Our story is rooted in a commitment to create a space, Polly’s Sensory Garden, where the gentle, transient delights found in a forested setting intertwine with the transformative currency of sensation and awareness. More than just a collection of plants and features— the Garden is a living, breathing testament to the power of healing and the beauty that unfolds when intention, nature and sensory experiences converge. Much like the multiple pathways into the Garden, these posts will be an expression of the on-going, interconnected voices telling a tale of a tapestry of hearts. If I do my job well, the stories of hands, talents and commitments of the dozens upon dozens who helped create, inform, shape and grow the Garden – and who continue to do so – will come alive across the many offerings to come. And I’m delighted to let you know that in many instances, you will hear directly from several guests sharing their part of our story.
As for me, my name is Tim Rogers. I’m Polly’s dad – and Will and Patrick’s, too, blessedly enough. I’m also one of the co-creators and curators of Polly's Sensory Garden. Telling her story, the story of how her garden came to life, how it lives today, and all the surprising stories encountered along the way is an immense privilege. More, our story might well capture your story, at least in part, even if this is the first time you’ve encountered Polly’s Sensory Garden. I hope that you will consider yourself a part of this journey of exploration, reflection, and inspiration as we continue to grow and evolve, just like the garden itself. And I hope that you will tell us your story.
“Beauty remains, even in misfortune. If you just look for it, you’ll discover more and more happiness and regain your balance. A person who’s happy will make others happy; a person who has courage and faith will never die in misery”
- Anne Frank
How it Started
Polly's Sensory Garden at UNC Charlotte was created as a tribute to Polly Rogers, a vibrant student whose life ended unexpectedly. Polly's passion for working with special needs students and her love for nature inspired friends, family, and the university community to build a space that honors her legacy. The garden offers sensory experiences that engage all five senses, providing a peaceful sanctuary that reflects Polly's spirit and continues to inspire and heal.
